Frequently Asked Questions

Which headphones work?

Any Bluetooth headphones your iPhone can play music through: AirPods, Bose, Sony, Beats and others. EchoBridge plays translations through whatever is connected, at full audio quality. It listens with the iPhone's own microphone, not the one in your earbuds, so keep the phone out and pointed toward the person speaking rather than in a pocket. Headphones are optional; without them, read along on screen.

Why don't I see suggested replies?

Everything else, translation and speaking, works without suggestions.

Why do my replies come out of the phone speaker?

So the person you're talking to can hear them. When you tap a suggestion, hold to talk or type a reply, EchoBridge speaks it from the iPhone's speaker in their language while your earbuds stay connected, then goes back to listening. To change a suggestion before it's spoken, touch and hold it and choose Edit before speaking.

How do I change or swap the languages?

Settings › Languages has two choices: They speak and You speak. The list shows what your iPhone supports on device for speech and translation. To flip the direction mid-conversation, tap the swap button beside the language pair at the top of the screen.

The first time I choose a language, it asks to download something

That is Apple's speech model and translation pack for that language. It downloads once, and EchoBridge carries on by itself when it's done. After that, the language works with no internet connection.

Translations arrive a moment late, or some audio is skipped

EchoBridge translates phrase by phrase, so each phrase arrives a moment after it's said. In Settings › Two-way, Translate in chunks sets the trade-off: Fast speaks sooner with shorter phrases, Accurate waits for more context. When someone talks faster than the voice can keep up, older audio is skipped and the text stays on screen; turn off Skip audio to keep up to hear everything, later.

The voice sounds robotic

Download a better one. In the iOS Settings app, go to Accessibility › Spoken Content › Voices and add an Enhanced or Premium voice for each language; they're free, sound far more natural and work offline. Then choose it in EchoBridge under Settings › Voices, where you can preview each one.

What is Listen only?

A mode for following along rather than taking part: a tour, a meeting, an announcement. Switch to it at the top of the screen. Choose Text only to read silently or In earbuds to hear the translation. There are no suggestions and nothing is spoken back. A thin line between cards marks a pause that may be a different speaker.

Does EchoBridge work on iPhone Duo?

Yes, in every pose. Closed, it's the phone layout, edge to edge on the outer display. Open flat, the transcript takes one half while your replies, Start and Hold to Talk take the other, clear of the fold. Half open like a laptop, the transcript is on the upright half and your replies and buttons on the flat half nearest you. Stood up like a tent, the conversation faces you on one half. It works in any orientation.

Can I use Hold to Talk with VoiceOver?

Yes. With VoiceOver on, double-tap Hold to Talk to start speaking and double-tap again to send.

Are my conversations saved?

Not unless you choose. Turn on Keep transcripts in Settings › Privacy and each conversation is saved on your iPhone when you stop listening. Open History to read, share or delete them, or to delete them all; New Conversation there clears the screen and starts fresh. Audio is never recorded.

Does EchoBridge work offline?

Yes, once each language has been downloaded. Speech recognition, translation, voices and suggested replies all run on the iPhone.
